HIMMEL OHNE GEDÄCHTNIS
Martin Bertelmann presents two high-contrast black-and-white photographs of a calm, peaceful-looking cloudscape. The images were taken on 1 October 2024 during a flight over Iraq, just hours before medium-range missiles passed through that very same airspace in the wake of a renewed escalation between Iran and Israel. The sky appears as a space of boundless freedom without memory — indifferent to the events unfolding beneath it. Thus, ‘Sky Without Memory’ becomes the starting point for a reflection on the coexistence of beauty and threat. The work powerfully brings home just how fragile peace and freedom are, even in our immediate neighbourhood.
