Is history a grand line of plans, decisions, and turning points? Or a cat's cradle that every hand picks up anew? Does it emerge from small coincidences, fleeting encounters, unexpected connections? Every event needs a next one to take it forward. That is how the next image takes shape. History could always have gone differently, and will, depending on what we choose next. Perhaps it is less of a plan than a chain, and more improbable than we think.

Olav Westphalen works precisely at this point of convergence. Moving across performance, drawing, and installation, he traces the contradictions in accepted models of explanation and the intellectual freedom that arises when power, knowledge, and morality begin to waver.
